Dear Republicans,
Do you know what the Republican Party stands for? If you do, please let me know.
Do you know what it is supposed to stand for? I am interested in that answer as well.
A few more questions: Is it time to reinvent the GOP? Or is it time to form a new party? Whatever answer you have there, I want to hear it.
I am not certain the Democrats can give you their party’s raison d’être either. The average Democrat might tell you they are into their party for its rhetoric on human rights issues. They do blab on about it. Democrats have brought many bills before congress to insure those human rights. However, the average Republican supports, generally speaking, human rights as well. It is the forced relationships that bother them.
A Republican is a different sort of animal from a Democrat. Dr. Jordan Peterson has pointed out that it is a matter of personalty, not politics, that lead people to choose one party over the other. Those open to new ideas, tend to be liberal. Those who are conscientious tend to be conservative. The rub here is that it is the conservatives that hold civilizations together. The liberals break things, like traditions. Some traditions need to be broken. Take slavery, for example. Slavery is a traditional human behavior. Marriage, another traditional human behavior, is best not broken. But it too has been broken.
I have been thinking these thoughts lately, because I am concerned about the state of our civilized world. As an American citizen, that has enjoyed the benefits of our open society, I want to keep it open. At the same time, I understand that that openness is a part of American tradition, a part of our liberal brain. The traditional brain tells me that forced openness is a nasty thing.
Bullies use force. Good people use persuasion.
What is disturbing to me, and many others, is this: “liberals” have become fascists, and conservatives have become victims.
I submit to you, neither position is healthy for our civilization. However, until the conservatives can understand what needs to be done, they will remain the whimpering child in the corner, unable to take on the bully hovering over them.
With the above paragraph, you can be certain I have offended many Republicans.
I am used to offending them, because I have this tendency to say what I think, which is based on what I have learned from observation and experience. Therefore, I will not say what you want to hear. I detest bull shit. If you are one of those offended Republicans, why do you take offense? That is another question I want to hear the answer to.
It was another essayist that prompted me to write this open letter to Republicans. The essay did not rant on about the usual suspects of the Democrats, and their behavior. The writer, Emerald Robinson, listed her complaints about Republicans, not behaving as, Republicans. Robinson’s objection to the current GOP, was that Republicans have gone into overload in the disarray department.
Oh I get that.
However, it was this statement and question, from a reader in the comments, that truly motivated me to respond:
“Every word you say is true. So what do we do?”
Yes, indeed, what do Republicans do? That is the golden question. I will answer it.
Organize the resistance.
Resistance begins with understanding who, and what you are, as conservatives, and Republicans. What, then, is the mission, and what are the goals? What sort of work will it take? What training will be needed? Will you reorganize? Or create a new party?
In the 19th century, the Whig party was confronted with the same question. The Whigs were the conservatives of their day. They had become useless to those that wanted to end slavery. Ergo, the Republicans were born.
Back in 2011, I wrote a book, titled, 4 Causes for Conservatives and Capitalists. It is a book detailing how the left holds four influential industries in their grip, and how conservatives can become involved in those industries. Those industries are education, entertainment, non profits and religion. It is a book on change.
Change is difficult, yes. However, you cannot pray for a change. You have to do it yourself, put your hands on it, get them dirty. There is no other way to get the job done.
You will have to change, if you want your party to change. Because political parties are a reflection of the people who get their hands dirty.
My final question is this: Is now the time for traditionalist and conservatives to reason together, and make a plan? To form a mission, and to set those goals?
I leave you with this. You are the problem. You are the solution.
Excellent, Laura. I agree with you 100%. Republicans have allowed themselves to become victims, when we should all be saying, "I am not a victim. I will assert my principles, and stand firm for them, no matter how strong the headwinds." New party? No. New leadership. Yes. We have to stop bringing knives to gun fights. We need to become activists like the other party. We can learn from them. We should be duplicating their tactics. Republicans, when they get to D. C. want to be liked and invited to cocktail parties. We have to stop sending Republicans to Washington who care about what the other side thinks of them. We need to send principled conservatives who know our history and stand firm on our Constitution. The other party is treating our Constitution as though it doesn't exist. I can go on, but thank you for this piece. I hope Republicans who want to resist will coalesce and bring change.
Bravo! I knew you would address this issue soon, and here it is! You are soooo right.
